Sevilla FC missed the chance to regain fifth position in the Liga as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Real Sporting de Gijón, who had slipped into the bottom three before the start of play.
Gaston Sangoy's looping header from Alberto Rivera's cross after six minutes provided the perfect pick-me-up for the hosts and Sevilla's chance to close within three points of leaders Real Madrid CF disappeared six minutes after the interval when Carmelo's centre was creatively flicked in by Diego Castro.
Real Zaragoza and RC Deportivo La Coruña remain without a league victory this season and still occupy the bottom two places after they both experienced further disappointments on Sunday. Depor did at least claim a point – and moved off the foot of the table – with a goalless draw at home to CA Osasuna, although the visitors played 55 minutes with ten men after Javier Camunas's dismissal.
Zaragoza succumbed 2-1 at Athletic Club after their hosts struck twice inside the opening 23 minutes, with Ádám Pintér's second-half sending-off adding to their problems. There were 1-0 wins for RCD Espanyol at RCD Mallorca and Real Racing Club at home to UD Almería, while Levante UD edged out Real Sociedad de Fútbol 2-1.
