Stade Brestois 29 were the beneficiaries of a first loss of the campaign for leaders Stade Rennais FC as last season's Ligue 2 runners-up moved within a point of top spot courtesy of a 2-0 win at FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Montpellier Hérault SC condemned Rennes to defeat in a match which ended with both teams down to ten men. Joris Marveaux scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute, before the visitors' Garry Bocaly (63) and Rennes' Kader Mangane (84) were dismissed in the second half.

Toulouse FC, meanwhile, are up to fourth after a 3-1 win at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard while Montpellier are fifth, two points behind their opponents and one shy of Brest, who trail second-placed AS St-Etienne on goals scored. Les Verts drew 1-1 at home with SM Caen, while Romain Poyet and Benoît Lesoimier struck for Alex Dupont's Brest team against Bordeaux.

Grégory Pujol scored twice as Valenciennes FC defeated AS Monaco FC 2-0 at the Stade Louis II, whereas substitute Issam Jemaa's added-time strike earned lowly RC Lens a 1-0 victory against OGC Nice. Elsewhere, AS Nancy-Lorraine were 1-0 winners at home to ten-man FC Lorient, who had Lionel Cappone (60) sent off.
