Liverpool rise as Torres torments Chelsea

Fernando Torres scored twice as Liverpool FC continued their revival with a 2-0 victory against leaders Chelsea FC, although Arsenal FC failed to capitalise due to a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle United FC.

Roy Hodgson's men have won three straight league matches after just one success from their first eight games, and their quelling of the champions owed much to their talismanic Spanish international striker. Torres latched onto Dirk Kuyt's pass to guide in the 11th-minute opener before a sublime curling effort close to the interval ensured the Reds moved into the top half of the table.

Arsenal passed up the chance to move back into second as they were shocked at home, Andy Carroll rising above goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański to head his sixth goal of the season on the stroke of half-time. The Gunners only lost twice at home in the league last term but have already succumbed to two promoted sides this time around after a 3-2 reverse against West Bromwich Albion FC in September.

West Brom had the chance to claim another major scalp at home to Manchester City FC, but Mario Balotelli picked an ideal moment to score his first league goals for the visitors in a 2-0 success. The Italian striker fired in after 20 and 26 minutes before being sent off in the second half along with the hosts' Youssuf Mulumbu, as Roberto Mancini's side stayed fourth – level on points with Arsenal and three ahead of fifth-placed Newcastle.
