The capital derby went the way of Real Madrid CF as Club Atlético de Madrid conceded twice in the opening 19 minutes in a 2-0 setback at the Santiago Bernabéu.
José Mourinho's men hit the ground running and took the lead after 13 minutes when Ángel Di María's deflected pass found Ricardo Carvalho, who finished confidently. Six minutes later it was 2-0, Mesut Özil's free-kick wrong-footing David De Gea and completing a fifth straight league success for the home side.
FC Barcelona had briefly taken over at the summit following a 3-1 triumph at Getafe CF. Irrepressible in the first half, the champions went 2-0 up inside 34 minutes with Lionel Messi and David Villa both on target – and each assisting the other's strike. Pedro Rodríguez (65) confirmed the victory, although Manu reduced arrears from the penalty spot following Gerard Piqué's handball, which earned the defender a second yellow card.
Third-placed Villarreal CF remain three points off the pace after they came from behind to beat Athletic Club 4-1. RC Deportivo La Coruña, who failed to win in their opening eight league games, made it back-to-back successes with a 2-1 victory at Levante UD that hauled them out of the bottom three. Lastly, Real Zaragoza finally broke their duck at the tenth attempt as Gabi's 96th-minute penalty earned a 3-2 win against RCD Mallorca.
