Cagliari Calcio have handed former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni the reins after parting company with Pierpaolo Bisoli in the wake of Sunday's 1-0 home defeat by Genoa CFC.

Donadoni, who has been out of work since leaving SSC Napoli in October 2009, has penned a deal until June 2012 with the Sardinian outfit. The weekend loss to Genoa left Cagliari precariously placed in 17th in Serie A, level on points with two of the bottom three clubs, prompting the decision to end Bisoli's short tenure.

His successor, who was in charge of the Azzurri between 2006 and 2008, said: "It didn't take much to accept Cagliari's offer." The 47-year-old added: "I'm sure our goals for the season can change very quickly. We just need to think positively and remain calm. I'm not an inventor or a magician but I want to put my experience at the team's disposal."

Bisoli, 44, was only appointed in the summer after leading AC Cesena to promotion to Serie A but he became the third coach to lose his job in the top-flight campaign after Franco Colomba at Bologna FC and Gian Piero Gasperini at Genoa.
