Manchester City FC and Arsenal FC both ended with ten men as they played out a goalless draw which edged them a point closer to Premier League leaders Manchester United FC.
United pulled clear by winning on Tuesday and are now two points ahead of City and four in front of Arsenal. It was Arsène Wenger's side who dominated for large swathes in north London, hitting the post through Robin van Persie and Cesc Fàbregas inside the opening half an hour. Van Persie was later denied by a fine Joe Hart save before Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta were dismissed a minute from time.
Tottenham Hotspur FC are a further four points adrift of Arsenal in fourth having lost 2-1 at Everton FC, while titleholders Chelsea FC fell further off the pace with a 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, who started the day bottom of the table. Carlo Ancelotti's team have now won just one of their last nine league fixtures.
Elsewhere, Leon Best broke his Newcastle United FC duck in emphatic fashion, scoring a hat-trick in his side's 5-0 win against West Ham United FC, who now prop up the standings. One place better off on 21 points are Wigan Athletic FC following their 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers FC.
Aston Villa FC, who have the same total, slipped to third bottom after losing 1-0 to Sunderland AFC, both sides having a man sent off. Meanwhile, Liverpool FC's travails continued with a 3-1 reverse at Blackburn Rovers FC.
