Kenny Dalglish's first league game in charge of Liverpool FC for almost 20 years ended in a 2-1 defeat by Blackpool FC on a night when Arsenal FC were surprised in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
Proceedings had started well for Dalglish and Co when Fernando Torres received Martin Kelly's pass, advanced into the area and rifled in the opener from a tight angle after three minutes. Blackpool, who beat their opponents by the same score earlier in the campaign at Anfield, were soon level, however, through Gary Taylor-Fletcher's composed finish.
The home side then consigned Liverpool to their fourth defeat in five league games on 69 minutes, the unmarked DJ Campbell heading in his fifth goal in as many games. Blackpool rise to ninth as a result, with the Reds sliding to 13th – four points above the relegation zone.
In the second League Cup semi-final, second-tier Ipswich Town FC caused a surprise by defeating a strong Arsenal FC team 1-0 in the first leg at home. The Suffolk team, beaten 7-0 by Chelsea FC in the FA Cup on Sunday, gained a narrow advantage to take into the return on 25 January when Tamás Priskin broke the visitors' offside trap and coolly stroked past Wojciech Szczęsny 12 minutes from time.
