Third-placed Valencia CF came from behind to triumph 2-1 at Athletic Club, while Villarreal CF struck late to secure a 2-2 draw away against Real Racing Club.
Athletic took a 14th-minute lead on home soil thanks to Fernando Llorente, and they held on to their advantage until the final 20 minutes, when Juan Mata (71) drew Valencia level. Not satisfied with ending their fightback there, the visitors secured victory through substitute Jonas nine minutes from time.
Villarreal could have briefly edged ahead of Valencia earlier in the day but instead saw out the weekend four points shy of Unai Emery's team. The Yellow Submarine fell behind to Racing in the third minute and although Marco Ruben (66) dragged them level, they were stung again just two minutes later when Giovani dos Santos found the net. Despite that blow, Nilmar was able to salvage a share of the spoils two minutes into added time.
Elsewhere, CA Osasuna are a single point clear of the relegation zone after losing 2-1 at Levante UD. A point and one place better off are Hércules CF, who played out a goalless draw against Getafe CF.
