Miguel Ángel Portugal has reached the end of his second spell in charge of Real Racing Club, with the Liga side 16th in the standings after collecting just five league wins in 2010/11.

Real Racing Club have begun their search for a new coach after it was announced that Miguel Ángel Portugal would not be continuing at the helm of the northern Spanish outfit.

After leading the Cantabrian club to a tenth-place finish in 2006/07, the 55-year-old has endured a more difficult second spell at El Sardinero since his appointment in November 2009. The team narrowly missed out on relegation last season, and this term have managed just five league wins from 22 outings.

Portugal, a former Real Madrid CF midfielder and technical director, leaves Racing lying in 16th spot in the Liga standings, one point off the relegation zone.

Following Juan Carlos Mandiá's dismissal as coach of Real Racing Club last week the Spanish side have turned to former trainer Miguel Ángel Portugal to lead them out of the lower reaches of Liga. The 53-year-old helped the El Sardinero outfit to a tenth-placed finish in 2005/06, taking up the position of technical secretary at Real Madrid CF shortly afterwards. His immediate task will be to raise confidence in a Racing side that has won just once in the Liga this season.

Real Racing Club Santander have dismissed coach Juan Carlos Mandiá following a disappointing start to the season, with Juanjo González placed in temporary charge. The Spanish strugglers are 17th in the 20-team Liga having won just once in their first ten league games. "The results we were hoping for haven't come and we are taking this decision while we still have time [to rescue the season]," said Racing president Francisco Pernía.
