Reading FC shocked Everton FC in the FA Cup fifth round with a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park on a night when another second-tier team, MSV Duisburg, reached the German Cup final.

Everton − who accounted for holders Chelsea FC in the last round − succumbed to Matthew Mills's first-half goal, the defender volleying through a crowd of players after his initial header had been blocked by Leon Osman. The Championship club will play Manchester City FC or Aston Villa FC, who meet on Wednesday, in the quarter-finals.

In the first of the German Cup semi-finals, Duisburg overcame FC Energie Cottbus 2-1 in the all-2. Bundesliga tie despite playing the last 13 minutes with ten men. They will face the winners of Wednesday's encounter between FC Bayern München and FC Schalke 04 in the showpiece on 21 May.

Elsewhere, Ligue 1 strugglers OGC Nice denied Stade de Reims the chance of making it a hat-trick of cup wins for lower-division sides by prevailing 3-2 after extra time in the sole Coupe de France quarter-final of the night. Eric Mouloungui struck the winner for the visitors, his second goal of the match, on 114 minutes.
