Raúl González headed in the only goal as FC Schalke 04 ended FC Bayern München's defence of the German Cup in the semi-finals while in the FA Cup, Nicklas Bendtner scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win for Arsenal FC.
Raúl, unmarked, turned the ball in from close after Benedikt Höwedes had headed Jefferson Farfán's corner towards goal on 15 minutes. Schalke will face MSV Duisburg, who on Tuesday overcame fellow 2. Bundesliga side FC Energie Cottbus, in their first final since losing to Bayern in 2005.
In England, goals from Marouane Chamakh (7) and Gaël Clichy (75) – his first since November 2008 − sandwiched Bendtner's treble as Arsenal overcame third-tier Leyton Orient FC in a fifth-round replay. The Gunners will visit Manchester United FC in the quarter-finals on Saturday week, while Manchester City FC host Reading FC the following day after defeating Aston Villa FC 3-0.
Coupe de France holders Paris Saint-Germain FC required extra time to defeat Ligue 2 outfit Le Mans UC 72 2-0. Both sides were down to ten men when Jean Christophe Bahebeck (109) broke the deadlock for the capital club. Neeskens Kebano, 18, added a second three minutes from time.
SO Chambéry's fairy-tale campaign ended with a 3-0 home defeat by Angers SCO, while Ligue 1 leaders LOSC Lille Métropole were 5-3 winners on penalties at home to FC Lorient, who had Bruno Ecuélé Manga (65) dismissed.
A solitary strike by Marc Janko (77), meanwhile, was responsible for FC Twente edging past ten-man FC Utrecht in the Dutch Cup semi-finals and in Scotland, Rangers FC had three players sent off − one after the final whistle − in a 1-0 fifth-round replay loss to Celtic FC.
