Clube Atlético de Madrid made a move in the right direction after coming from behind to overcome CA Osasuna in a five-goal thriller.
Kike Sola (31) and Javad Nekounam's strikes (80) bookended Diego Costa's hat-trick, which was enough to take Atlético level on 42 points with seventh-placed Athletic Club.
Earlier in the day, Sevilla FC continued their good form with a 3-1 victory against relegation-imperilled Real Zaragoza, who are languishing a point above the bottom three as a result of this third successive away defeat. Though Jirí Jarošík gave Zaragoza hope (47) when cancelling out Diego Perotti's opener (43), penalties by Frédéric Kanouté (56) and Álvaro Negredo (90+3) lifted Sevilla into fifth place, two points clear of RCD Espanyol, who succumbed to their third straight loss against Real Racing Club.
In Barcelona, Pablo Osvaldo's second spot kick in as many matches (37) had put Espanyol ahead only for Gonzalo Colsa (50) and Giovani dos Santos (75) to condemn the hosts to their eighth defeat in ten matches. RC Deportivo La Coruña also won 2-1 against RCD Mallorca, ensuring they remain a place above Zaragoza and five points clear of Hércules CF despite their impressive 3-1 win at Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Second-bottom Málaga CF are level with Hércules on 29 points after losing 3-1 at Levante UD.
