SSC Napoli have extended the contract of Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani by a further year, tying him to next season's UEFA Champions League hopefuls until summer 2016.

Cavani, who joined from US Città di Palermo last summer, has been instrumental in Napoli's third-place finish in Serie A this season, scoring 26 league goals to help the Partenopei secure a place in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage.

The 24-year-old former Danubio FC prospect, who also scored a further seven in the UEFA Europa League, left for Uruguay immediately after signing his new deal as he is suspended for the last match of the Serie A campaign.

"Everything happened very quickly; we met today, he signed and then left," said Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis. "We are extremely happy because Cavani is a great player and a very nice person. He has a great personality and will be very important for us next season."
