The FC Twente story: Looking back and forwards

A Dutch Cup win and an Eredivisie runners-up spot amounted to a memorable season for FC Twente, who have big plans off the pitch as the last part of our exclusive film shows.

The season may not have ended the way FC Twente wanted, but that in no way detracted from a campaign which is regarded in the Tukkers' camp as one which "exceeded our expectations".

Having experienced UEFA Champions League football for the first time and then reached the last eight of the UEFA Europa League, Twente entered the final furlong firmly ensconced in the Eredivisie title race and with a Dutch Cup final against rivals AFC Ajax to look forward to.

A stunning comeback from two goals down secured Twente's third domestic cup but a week later it was the Amsterdam side who were celebrating after gaining revenge for that defeat by prevailing 3-1 in the final-day title decider.

"You have to look at the bigger picture, and I think we've had a really good season, getting to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, winning the cup and the Super Cup, and competing for the title until the very last day," midfielder Wout Brama told the concluding part of UEFA.com's behind-the-scenes documentary. "That exceeded our expectations. Though today leaves a sour taste, eventually we'll be proud of this."

The scenes at the Twente's homecoming parade – when the squad paraded through the streets on an open-top bus – left little doubt about the fans' view of the season. "We may not have won the biggest prize, but it's amazing that even if we lose, the supporters are always right behind us," said striker Luuk de Jong. Emir Bajrami added: "It feels like we are the champions, to be honest. It's incredible what the supporters have been doing in the last weeks for us."

With another season over, plans are firmly afoot to ensure the club continues to develop, including investing more money into the women's team – which this season won the Dutch title – and the building of a new stand which will increase the capacity of the FC Twente Stadion to 30,000. "We once said that we were finished building, but at FC Twente we're actually never standing still," said Eugenio Porcu, the club's operational affairs manager. "The expansion fits perfectly with the growth that the club has gone through in recent years."
