Eredivisie side FC Utrecht have appointed Erwin Koeman as head coach on a one-year contract.

Koeman, the 49-year older brother of Ronald, was officially installed in the Stadion Galgenwaard hot seat today after agreeing to replace Ton de Chatinier who was dismissed last week.

"FC Utrecht are a real people's club, there is always something going on, but it's also a club with a good organisation, a talented squad and ambition," he said. "The latter is very important. I am a no-nonsense figure and completely suited to the playing style and vision of the club."

For the former Dutch international midfielder, the job at Utrecht – ninth in the Netherlands in 2010/11 – is a first coaching assignment since his tenure as Hungary's national coach was ended last July. Previously he had been in charge of RKC Waalwijk and Feyenoord as head coach, after a spell as an assistant with PSV Eindhoven. A UEFA European Championship winner in 1988, his playing career also featured stints at FC Groningen, PSV and KV Mechelen.
