Germany is mourning the loss of 1954 FIFA World Cup winner Ulrich Biesinger after the former FC Augsburg forward died on Saturday aged 77.

Biesinger made his first-team debut for Augsburg in 1952 before being selected as the youngest member of West Germany's 1954 FIFA World Cup winning squad. He did not feature in Switzerland but Biesinger went on to make seven appearances for his country, scoring two goals.

Biesinger struck 149 goals in 265 matches in the Oberliga Süd, the then top flight, and later had a three-year spell at SSV Reutlingen 05 before ending his playing days at TSV Schwaben Augsburg. He retired in 1966, aged 33.

"Only a few weeks ago Biesinger, who was a devoted Augsburg supporter and watched almost every match, was celebrating our promotion to the Bundesliga," the club said in a statement. "It was a dream come true for this ardent footballer who, unfortunately, will not be with us to take part in the dream."
