The start of the season in Spain's top two divisions has been delayed by at least one week because of a players' strike which has led to the cancellation of this weekend's opening programme of matches.

The first matchday in both the top flight – the Liga – and the second division has been postponed by the strike action caused by a dispute between the players' union AFE (Asociación de Futbolistas Españoles) and the league governing body LFP (Liga de Fútbol Profesional). It remains possible that the top two divisions will kick off next weekend instead.

The matchday one fixtures will be rearranged for later in the season.
