Mario Gomez upstaged FC Bayern München team-mate Franck Ribéry, scoring four goals to the Frenchman's two in a 7-0 victory against SC Freiburg, with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart also securing healthy winning margins.

Gomez finished off a fine team move to open the scoring on eight minutes, with Ribéry hitting two more before the break, and setting up Gomez for his second of the day on 52 minutes. A slightly fortuitous deflection saw the 26-year-old complete his second hat-trick in as many games soon afterwards, and he then took his tally to eight for the season, making it 6-0 from the penalty spot with 18 minutes to go. Substitute Nils Petersen's first Bundesliga goal completed the rout late on.

Hoffenheim came closest to matching Bayern's tally with a 4-0 triumph at 1. FSV Mainz 05, while Stuttgart were 3-0 winners at home against UEFA Europa League contenders Hannover 96. Hertha BSC Berlin beat champions Borussia Dortmund 2-1 away again, and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach's healthy start to the season continued with a 1-0 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Bayern''s heroics somewhat overshadowed the north German derby which concluded the day's fixtures, where SV Werder Bremen beating Hamburger SV 2-0. Claudio Pizarro scored both goals in the second half, nodding home the first after Marko Marin's free-kick came back to him off the post, and then firing home a tremendous second on the turn after chesting down a Marin corner.
