Danish striker Carl Age Præst, who shone in Italy for Juventus and S.S. Lazio, has died at the age of 89.
Born in Copenhagen and raised in an orphanage, Præst started his career at Østerbros BK but, after he had played a key role in the Denmark side that took bronze at the 1948 London Olympics, his career path took a surprising turn.
His performance in the 5-3 quarter-final success against Italy alerted Juventus to his ability and he was to play 232 games for the Turin club from 1949 to 1956. He won titles in 1950 and 1952 before ending his playing days with a final campaign at Lazio.
After hearing of his death, Juventus said: "We lost a piece of Juventus history today. He was one of the stars of our team in the 1950s. At this sad time Juventus send our sympathies to his family."
With Denmark forbidding professionals from representing the national team until 1971, Præst made only 24 appearances for his country, racking up 17 goals.
