Mkhitaryan named Armenia's finest for second time

Armenia's national team dominated the country's football awards after their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign, with FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrik Mkhitaryan named top player.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Henrik Mkhitaryan has been named Armenian player of the year for a second time.

The 22-year-old topped a poll involving Football Federation of Armenia (HFF) members, club representatives and national media, with forward Yura Movsisyan and goalkeeper Roman Berezovski second and third respectively. "Obviously, I am very happy," said Mkhitaryan, also a winner in 2009. "However, with this honour comes responsibility and I would not be here without my team-mates."

The shortlisted trio played crucial roles as Armenia came close to reaching the UEFA EURO 2012 play-offs, being denied only by a 2-1 last-day defeat by the Republic of Ireland. Mkhitaryan scored the visitors' consolation in Dublin – his sixth goal in ten qualifying games. The squad received special prizes marking their achievement, while boss Vardan Minasyan was voted coach of the year.
