Sunderland AFC have appointed Martin O'Neill as their new manager on a three-year contract.
The 59-year-old takes over from Steve Bruce, who left the club earlier this week, and will take over on Monday. Eric Black is in caretaker charge for tomorrow's Premier League fixture against fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.
A European Champion Clubs' Cup winner as a player with Nottingham Forest FC, former Northern Irish international O'Neill has managerial experience stretching back to 1987. Most notably he won two League Cups with Leicester City FC and led Celtic FC to the 2003 UEFA Cup final and three Scottish titles including a treble and a double.
Out of coaching since leaving Aston Villa FC on the eve of last season and a Sunderland fan as a boy, O'Neill said: "It's a very nice feeling to be back in football and to be the manager of Sunderland. It's a big moment for me. I'd heard about what a good club it was but coming here, seeing the stadium and training ground, I've been bowled over."
