Manchester City FC moved three points clear at the top of the English Premier League as first-half goals from Sergio Agüero and Yaya Touré paved the way for a comfortable home victory against Liverpool FC.
Roberto Mancini's side had taken only one point from their two previous games yet dropped only two points at home in the league in 2011 and were in front in the tenth minute when Pepe Reina allowed Agüero's 25-metre effort to creep into the net.
Touré headed a second from a corner in the 33rd minute, although City's smooth progress towards three points was interrupted when Gareth Barry collected a second yellow card 17 minutes from time. Within two minutes, however, Touré had been felled by Martin Škrtel and James Milner added a clinching third from the penalty spot.
Tottenham Hotspur FC moved within three points of second-placed Manchester United FC with a narrow home win against West Bromwich Albion FC, Jermain Defoe scoring the only goal after 63 minutes at White Hart Lane. Sunderland AFC, winners against Manchester City on Sunday, climbed up to tenth position with a 4-1 victory at Wigan Athletic FC.
