Third-placed Valencia CF experienced frustration again as a 2-2 draw against Real Racing Club extended their winless Liga run to four, though the point moved them further clear of Levante UD as their neighbours lost 2-1 to Getafe CF.
Unai Emery's side looked set for victory when Aritz Aduriz's second-half double put them ahead following Adrian González's early opener for Racing, but on-loan defender Bernardo Espinosa levelled the scores two minutes from the end. Neither team was then able to engineer a winner as Racing lost Pedro Munitis to a red card and Valencia had Ricardo Costa dismissed in added time.
Los Che nonetheless moved five points ahead of Levante after the fourth-placed club suffered a third defeat in five Liga outings. Daniel Güiza (32) and Diego Castro (82) put Getafe in control and the visitors were rarely troubled before Rubén Suárez converted a late penalty.
Elsewhere, Málaga CF went seventh following a 2-1 victory against Sevilla FC, and Granada CF achieved the same result at Real Betis Balompié to end a run of three successive league defeats. Real Sporting de Gijón's relegation troubles were increased, meanwhile, as they lost 5-1 at Real Sociedad de Fútbol, for whom David Zurutuza struck twice in the opening three minutes.
