Valencia CF missed the chance to consolidate their grip on third place in the Liga standings as they were held to a goalless draw at Club Atlético de Madrid.

Victory would have moved Unai Emery's side seven points clear of city neighbours Levante UD, but it was seventh-placed Atlético who finished the game on top as the visitors increasingly looked content with a stalemate. Indeed, two points behind Levante, who currently occupy the last UEFA Champions League berth, the capital outfit have now gone five league matches without conceding.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Villarreal CF climbed out of the relegation zone courtesy of a 2-1 success at Sevilla FC. Javier Camuñas grabbed the winner nine minutes from time to lift the visitors up to 16th, five places beneath their hosts, who have lost five of their last seven Liga outings.

Real Sporting de Gijón remain second from bottom following their 1-1 draw against CA Osasuna, with Real Zaragoza seven points adrift in last place after they lost 2-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano de Madrid.
