Villarreal CF have charged Miguel Ángel Lotina with the task of steering the eastern Spanish club to Liga safety.
José Francisco Molina became the second coach to be dismissed at El Madrigal this season following Sunday's 1-0 reverse at Levante UD, a result which left the Yellow Submarine one place and just three points above the relegation zone. Lotina, 54, has stepped into the breach after agreeing to take the helm for the remaining 11 league games of the campaign. Juan Carlos Garrido was sacked in December.
A former striker for UD Logroñés and CD Castellón, Lotina has had coaching spells at CD Numancia, CA Osasuna, RC Celta de Vigo and RCD Espanyol, whom he led to Copa del Rey success in 2006. A stint with Real Sociedad de Fútbol followed before he accepted the post at RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2007, staying in Galicia until Deportivo's relegation at the end of last term.
His first task in charge is Villarreal's home match against Liga leaders Real Madrid CF on Wednesday.
