SSC Napoli surrendered the initiative in the race for a top-three finish and a place in next season's UEFA Champions League after Fábio Simplício's late strike meant they had to settle for a 2-2 draw at AS Roma.

A win for Walter Mazzarri's men would have lifted them into third place, two points clear of S.S. Lazio, who travel to Udinese Calcio tomorrow. However, it was the hosts who forged ahead courtesy of a Marquinho goal four minutes before the break. The Partenopei responded, though, and levelled through Juan Zúñiga just after half-time, before taking the lead thanks to Edinson Cavani's 22nd Serie A goal this season.

However, Simplício struck two minutes from time to move Roma to within four points of Napoli and keep their hopes of a top-three finish alive. Elsewhere, Fabrizio Miccoli scored two minutes after the break to cancel out Nicola Legrottaglie's strike as US Città di Palermo drew with Calcio Catania and it finished goalless between Cagliari Calcio and AC Chievo Verona.
