BSC Young Boys have filled the void left by Christian Gross's departure with the appointment of former Switzerland defender Martin Rueda.

The 49-year-old has been handed a one-year contract and will be charged with the task of mounting a challenge for the Swiss Super League title after Young Boys finished the 2011/12 season in third, 23 points behind champions FC Basel 1893. Joining Rueda as his assistant is Thomas Häberli, who spent nine years with the club as a player.

Capped five times by his country, Rueda has previously occupied coaching posts at FC Aarau, FC Wohlen and FC Winterthur while he leaves his current role at FC Lausanne-Sport after guiding the club to promotion in 2010/11.

Young Boys will enter the qualifying stages of next season's UEFA Europa League.
