Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has agreed a new contract that ties him to the German champions until 2017. The 23-year-old had two years remaining on his previous deal but was happy to extend his association that began when he joined the club from FC Bayern München in 2008.

"When the club approached me and asked if I wanted to extend my contract, I was sure right away that I wanted to continue to be a part of a team which has been so successful," said Hummels. Capped 14 times by his country, the defender is currently with the Germany squad as they prepare for their UEFA EURO 2012 Group B opener against Portugal on 9 June.

"Mats could play for every club in Europe, but he chose Borussia Dortmund – that's outstanding," said Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp. "He is an intelligent player when it comes to winning challenges and closing down space. I don't know any other player in Europe that does this as well as he does."
