Fortune favours Milsami in Moldovan Super Cup

FC Milsami-Ursidos Orhei surived a number of scares to secure a goalless draw before defeating FC Sheriff 6-5 on penalties to claim their first ever Moldovan Super Cup.

Moldovan Cup holders Milsami had to contain their opponents' attacks throughout the game, starting as early as the sixth minute when new Sheriff signing Saša Marjanović was denied by Adrian Negai. The Moldovan First Divison champions remained in charge but could not find a way past Negai, Serghei Gheorghiev next to be thwarted from point-blank range.

It was a similar script after the interval, with Negai keeping out Aleksandar Pešić before Nail Zamaliev headed just wide and, in added time, Alexandr Pascenco saw his powerful effort saved on the line. The match went straight to penalties, and Negai was once again the hero as he saved Darwin Rios's spot kick to earn his side only their second ever trophy.

"Sheriff played better but we were the luckier side," the Milsami keeper told UEFA.com. "We chose defensive tactics and our strategy paid off. I was not guessing when I stopped the decisive penalty – I just knew he would hit it that way."

"We were lucky not to concede," added Milsami coach Serghei Clescenco. "Given how strong Sheriff are and that we were playing on their pitch, we decided to let them have more of the ball. It was tough but our goalkeeper did extremely well once more and brought the club our second trophy."
