Valletta FC claimed the first silverware of the Maltese season by defeating Hibernians FC 3-1 in the Super Cup at the Ta' Qali National Stadium.

The victory was the Premier League champions' third in succession in the season curtain-raiser and tenth overall – five more than any other club. Malta captain Michael Mifsud scored the first of three goals in nine minutes for Mark Miller's team, turning provider soon after for debutant Leandro Da Silva Almeida.

Dyson Falzon increased the lead, with Jackson Lima's reply for Hibernians, FA Trophy winners in 2011/12, just before the break proving nothing more than consolation. Miller told UEFA.com: "It's a good start to the new season but a lot of work still has to be done."

Last month Valletta lost 7-2 on aggregate to FK Partizan in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.
