Valenciennes end Marseille's perfect start

Olympique de Marseille's flawless start to the Ligue 1 season ended in spectacular fashion after they suffered a chastening 4-1 defeat at Valenciennes FC.

OM became the first team since AS Monaco FC in 1960/61 to triumph in each of their first six Ligue 1 games but their spirits were dampened on 16 minutes when Valenciennes took the lead courtesy of Gaël Danic's superb free-kick. Danic turned provider 11 minutes before the break for Anthony Le Tallec to make it two, and Foued Kadir capitalised on Steve Mandanda's misplaced pass to compound OM's misery.

Things got worse for Élie Baup's side after half-time when Le Tallec doubled his tally with a perfectly placed header, and they had to wait until added time for Jordan Ayew to conjure a consolation. 

Meanwhile, Olympique Lyonnais lost their unbeaten league record as FC Girondins de Bordeaux caused a shock at the Stade de Gerland. Second-half strikes from Benoît Trémoulinas and Cheick Diabaté made the difference in a 2-0 victory for Francis Gillot's men, who have yet to be beaten this term. Elsewhere, AS Saint-Étienne are without a win in three league matches after being held to a goalless draw at home to Stade de Reims Champagne.
