FC Bayern München consolidated their early-season place at the Bundesliga summit with a 3-1 victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05, while champions Borussia Dortmund comfortably overcame Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
The international break did little to disrupt the rhythm of Jupp Heynckes' charges, nor that of summer signing Mario Mandžukić, who took just two minutes to score his third goal in as many Bundesliga appearances. Bastian Schweinsteiger doubled Bayern's lead 11 minutes later and although Adam Szalai pulled one back from the spot for the visitors, Toni Kroos (90+2) put the match beyond doubt.
Two first-half goals proved crucial at Westfalenstadion, too, where centre-back Mats Hummels and midfielder Jakub Błaszczykowski – with his second in three league matches – gave Dortmund a 2-0 half-time lead against Leverkusen. Robert Lewandowski (78) rounded off the scoring.
Elsewhere, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach lost 3-2 at home to 1. FC Nürnberg. Timm Klose and Timmy Simons put the visitors two up after 25 minutes, before Luuk de Jong and Granit Xhaka levelled. Hiroshi Kiyotake (55) had the final say. FC Schalke 04 triumphed 2-0 at SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the late fixture.
