RCD Espanyol have announced that Mexican coach Javier Aguirre will lead the team until the end of the campaign following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino on Monday.

A former Espanyol defender, Pochettino's dismissal after almost four years in charge came after a run of three successive Liga defeats left the 2007 UEFA Cup finalists bottom of the standings. Aguirre, 53, arrives at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat boasting plenty of experience in Spain having taken charge of CA Osasuna, Club Atlético de Madrid and, most recently, Real Zaragoza. He also enjoyed two stints at the Mexico helm.

Espanyol look to overturn a 3-1 deficit when they host Sevilla FC in the second leg of their Copa del Rey round of 32 encounter on Wednesday, while a trip to fellow Liga strugglers Granada CF follows on Sunday.
