Jan Vertonghen's second-half goal secured Tottenham Hotspur FC a 1-0 victory against Swansea City AFC, before West Bromwich Albion FC's home match with West Ham United FC finished goalless.
Michael Laudrup's Swansea long looked set for a point in north London as their meticulous rearguard display starved Tottenham of any joy in the final third. However, Vertonghen finally ended their resistance 15 minutes from time when he finished first time past Gerhard Tremmel after Andros Townsend's free-kick had only been half-cleared. Spurs then survived a late Swansea onslaught to move into fourth ahead of Everton FC.
In the late kick-off, West Brom's stuttering form continued at home to West Ham as they made it three games without scoring. Both sides squandered opportunities to claim all three points with Joey O'Brien steering narrowly over for the visitors before James Morrison's header thundered back off the crossbar from point-blank range.
