RC Deportivo La Coruña have appointed Fernando Vázquez as successor to coach Domingos Paciência who quit the club after just six games in charge on Monday.

A native of Galicia, Vázquez will bring vast coaching experience to the Liga's bottom-placed side, who have won just three of their 23 league games this term. The 58-year-old has gained promotion to the Spanish top flight with Real Betis Balompié and RC Celta de Vigo, while he also lists Real Oviedo, RCD Mallorca, UD Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Real Valladolid CF among his other former employers.

Shortly after being unveiled as their third coach this campaign, Vázquez described the task of keeping one-time champions Depor – six points from safety – in the Liga as "difficult but not impossible". Referring to his six-year absence from top-class football since leaving Celta in 2007, he added: "I've spent time away from the pitch but I haven't retired and I am here to show my dedication at Deportivo." Vázquez's first game in charge will be Friday's visit to Sevilla FC.
