Paris Saint-Germain FC prepared for next week's UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg with FC Barcelona by edging out Montpellier Hérault SC 1-0 at the Parc des Princes to open up an eight-point lead at the Ligue 1 summit.
The home team burst out of the blocks with a beautifully-weighted pass from full-back Maxwell skewering Montpellier's back line, only for Clément Chantôme to fire wide. Zlatan Ibrahimović was next to miss the target when well placed in front of goal before the division's 25-goal top scorer sent a stinging shot fizzing past a post.
Carlo Ancelotti's men resumed with the same air of authority after the restart. Jérémy Ménez took receipt of Ibrahimović's knock-down and had goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourden sprawling to his right with a dipping 20-metre volley. Just when it seemed the visitors had weathered the storm, they were hit with a sucker punch ten minutes from time. Ménez and Ibrahimović combined intuitively to set up substitute Kevin Gameiro, who finished with aplomb.
