Wigan denied at Spurs, Everton stay in hunt

An 89th-minute Emmerson Boyce own goal denied Wigan Athletic FC a comeback win against Tottenham Hotspur FC.

The Latics showed steel to overturn an unusual early opener from Gareth Bale, the Welshman charging down Joel Robles' clearance for his 19th of the campaign. Boyce headed in at the right end to provide an immediate response, and Callum McManaman put Wigan in the lead just after the break. A win would have lifted Wigan out of the relegation zone and dampened Spurs' assault on third place, but Boyce inadvertently deflected Tom Huddlestone's free-kick past Robles and the spoils were shared. Tottenham are level on 62 points with fourth-placed Chelsea FC.

Like Spurs, Everton FC are in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League place, and Steven Pienaar's first-half strike sank Fulham FC at Goodison Park to keep the sixth-placed Toffees in the mix, adrift by just three points.

Elsewhere, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge both scored twice as Liverpool won 6-0 against Newcastle United FC. Stoke City FC, meanwhile, grabbed an important win against Norwich City FC to all but guarantee their Premier League status, while in the early kick-off, Yaya Touré's stunner helped Manchester City FC triumph over West Ham United FC.

Southampton FC had Gaston Ramirez and Daniel Fox dismissed in a heavy home defeat by West Bromwich Albion FC, who themselves lost Marc-Antoine Fortuné to a red card.
