SC Freiburg improved their hopes of clinching a UEFA Europa League berth for next season by seeing off FC Augsburg 2-0, with their closest rivals Hamburger SV only able to draw 1-1 with VfL Wolfsburg.
Sixth-placed Freiburg went ahead with half an hour gone when Cedric Makiadi buried the rebound after Alex Manninger had parried a Jonathan Schmid effort. Schmid then made sure of the points himself just after the hour mark, racing onto Max Kruse's through ball and bringing up his ninth Bundesliga goal this term.
The result leaves Augsburg third from bottom with two games remaining and lifted Freiburg three points clear of seventh-placed Hamburg. Heiko Westermann gave HSV the lead against Wolfsburg on the stroke of half-time, but the visitors responded through Makoto Hasebe after 65 minutes.
