Real Madrid CF overcame Real Valladolid CF in a seven-goal thriller which means FC Barcelona must wait another week to secure the Liga title.

Had José Mourinho's men lost at home against their mid-table opponents, the Blaugrana could have been crowned champions with a win on Sunday but, despite going 1-0 down to an early Óscar González goal, Los Merengues prevailed.

Marc Valiente diverted Ángel Di María's firm low shot past his own goalkeeper to level matters, before Cristiano Ronaldo headed in. Javi Guerra bundled in at the back post before the break to make it 2-2, but Kaká's left-footer and another Ronaldo header – his 33rd Liga goal of the season – put the game out of Valldolid's reach, although Lluis Sastre's spectacular late volley had Madridista hearts racing.

Valencia CF scored four without reply against CA Osasuna to move within two points of fourth-placed Real Sociedad de Fútbol. Two points are also all that separate struggling Osasuna from the relegation zone – and their fight against the drop will not be aided by the red cards picked up by Alejandro Arribas and Timor in the second half against Voro's charges.

Granada CF edged past Málaga CF to boost their survival bid, while fellow strugglers RC Deportivo La Coruña can take some heart after a 0-0 draw against third-placed Club Atlético de Madrid in the day's late kick-off.
