Manchester City FC are assured of a top-three finish in the Premier League after a 1-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion FC, on a night when relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic FC were beaten at home by Swansea City AFC.
Edin Džeko volleyed in the only goal at the City of Manchester Stadium after 35 minutes, applying a right-footed finish to Carlos Tévez's cross. Roberto Mancini's team will be confirmed as runners-up if third-placed Chelsea FC lose to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC on Wednesday in what is a key game in the race to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Wigan, who play Manchester City on Saturday at Wembley in the FA Cup final, surrendered the lead twice in losing 3-2 to Swansea, a result which leaves them three points from safety with two matches remaining.
Dwight Tiendalli, capitalising on defensive uncertainty, stabbed in the decisive goal with 14 minutes left, Àngel Rangel (50) and Etay Shechter (59) having drawn the League Cup winners level early in the second half.
