Ferdinand stays on for 12th season at United

"It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue," said former England defender Rio Ferdinand after signing a new one-year contract at Manchester United FC.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand will remain a Manchester United FC player for a 12th season after agreeing a one-year contract.

Ferdinand called time on his international career last week but looks certain to add to his 432 United appearances. The centre-back, 34, has won six Premier League trophies during his time at Old Trafford, all under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, he will play under ex-Everton FC manager David Moyes next term following Sir Alex's retirement.

"It is clear to everyone that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room; I am delighted he has signed a new contract," said Moyes. "I am looking forward to working with him."

Ferdinand added: "I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn't want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week? It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David and am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club."
