Former Turkey striker Selçuk Yula, who scored 134 goals for Fenerbahçe SK between 1979 and 1986, has died at the age of 53 after suffering a heart attack in Istanbul on Tuesday morning.
The Ankara-born Yula began his career at Şekerspor AŞ in 1977 but will forever be associated with the yellow and navy stripes of Fenerbahçe, whom he joined two years later. An expert from the penalty spot, he was prolific for the Istanbul giants, finishing as the league's top scorer in 1981/82 and 1982/83. The latter season also brought the Turkish Cup and the first of two championship titles, the second of which followed two years later.
Yula was by now a regular in the national team, scoring four goals in 24 appearances between 1981 and 1988. He also captained the Crescent-Stars on three occasions. In 1986 he left Turkey for a season in the German Bundesliga with Berlin outfit SV Blau-Weiss 90 and on his return home, he had spells at Sarıyer GK and Galatasaray AŞ before retiring in 1992.
He became a popular pundit, for his work on Fenerbahçe's official club TV channel and more broadly as a columnist for Turkish sports daily Fotomaç.
