An added-time Cristiano Ronaldo penalty secured a narrow win for Real Madrid CF at Elche FC to move Carlo Ancelotti's charges within two points of Liga leaders FC Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid.
Ronaldo scored his fifth goal in six games to give Madrid the lead six minutes into the second half and, although Richmond Boakye struck in the first minute of added time there was still time for one final twist. The Portuguese international kept his cool from the spot in the 96th minute to ensure the Merengues remain in touching distance at the top.
Elsewhere, Sevilla FC moved off the foot of the table with their first win of the season as Ivan Rakitić and Carlos Bacca both struck twice in a convincing 4-1 home win against Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, who ended with nine men. Valencia CF's upswing in form continued as a Jonas goal four minutes into added time earned them a last-gasp win at Granada CF.
