Villarreal CF remain unbeaten in the Liga this season after consigning RCD Espanyol to a 2-1 reverse, while there were also wins for Athletic Club and Getafe CF.
The Yellow Submarine made the perfect start when Jérémy Perbet struck inside the first minute, before Jonathan Pereira consolidated the lead after half-time. Sergio García's reply ensured a nervy final ten minutes but Villarreal weathered the storm to tighten their grip on fourth place.
Elsewhere, Athletic showed their mettle to get past Real Betis Balompié. The home team were reeling when Jorge Molina broke the deadlock just three minutes after Beñat had missed from the spot. The midfielder's blushes were spared, however, when Óscar de Marcos restored parity and Mikel San José made it two with eight minutes left.
As for Getafe, they swept aside RC Celta de Vigo 2-0 courtesy of goals either side of the interval from defender Lisandro López and Álvaro Arroyo.
