Villarreal CF missed the chance to displace Real Madrid CF in third spot in Spain as the Yellow Submarine suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Real Betis Balompié.

Betis had only registered one previous Liga win so far this term, but Nosa Igiebor's goal after 36 minutes was enough to earn a 1-0 win and move Pepe Mel's side up to 11th. Villarreal were unable to get back on level terms and will hope to return to form on Friday when they host Granada CF.

RCD Espanyol missed the chance to go fifth as they endured a second successive defeat, a pair of second-half Adrián Colunga goals earning a 2-0 victory for Getafe CF as they registered a third win of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Levante UD ensured they remain unbeaten since the opening day of the season as Jordi Xumetra got the only goal of the game in the 87th minute to secure a 1-0 win at ten-man CA Osasuna. Lastly, Elche CF recorded the same scoreline in securing a first win of 2013/14 courtesy of Javier Márquez's strike at RC Celta de Vigo.
