AFC Ajax have paid tribute to Gerrie Mühren, after their skilful former midfielder died at the age of 67 following a long illness.
"Ajax wishes the ones he left behind a lot of strength as they deal with this loss," read a club statement, announcing that they will mark Mühren's passing during their Dutch Cup game against his old side FC Volendam next Wednesday.
The older brother of Ajax, FC Twente, Ipswich Town FC and Manchester United FC player Arnold Mühren, Gerrie was one of the stars of the Ajax golden generation that won three successive European Champion Clubs' Cups from 1971 to 1973. He entered into Dutch footballing folklore when he played a bit of keepy-up during a 1-0 semi-final victory at Real Madrid CF on 25 April 1973 – a game in which he scored the winner.
"It was the moment when Ajax and Real Madrid changed positions," said Mühren later. "Before that it was always the big Real Madrid and the little Ajax. When they saw me doing that, the balance changed."
Capped ten times, he represented Real Betis Balompié and MVV Maastricht later in his career, then organised football clinics with his brother after retiring.
