Genoa CFC have turned to former coach Gian Piero Gasperini to take over the reins on a three-year contract after parting company with Fabio Liverani in the wake of Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by SSC Napoli.

The 37-year-old former Italy and SS Lazio midfielder Liverani was appointed as first-team coach in the summer after being promoted from Genoa's youth system. However, his tenure lasted only six Serie A games, from which the side garnered just one win and four points.

Gasperini, 55, coached the Grifone from 2006 to 2010, helping the side achieve promotion to the top flight during his first season in charge before earning UEFA Europa League qualification in 2008/09. He left Genoa to join FC Internazionale Milano ahead of the 2011/12 season but was sacked after only four games, before experiencing another turbulent spell at US Città di Palermo last season.
