English League Cup
José Mourinho, who lifted the League Cup twice during his first stint in charge of Chelsea FC, is a step closer to making it a hat-trick after a 2-0 success at Premier League leaders Arsenal FC. César Azpilicueta's opportunist effort and Juan Mata's splendid second-half strike were enough to earn the Blues a place in the quarter-finals. Also through to the last eight are Manchester United FC, 4-0 victors against Norwich City FC at Old Trafford with the help of a Javier Hernández double.

The one upset of the evening came at second-division Leicester City FC, who prevailed 4-3 against Fulham FC. The Cottagers' top-flight counterparts West Ham United FC had no such problems, winning 2-0 at Burnley FC, while Stoke City FC progressed on penalties at Birmingham City FC after an eight-goal thriller. The draw for the next round is made on Wednesday, when Manchester City FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC are in action.

French League Cup
LOSC Lille were one of three Ligue 1 teams who succumbed to lower league opposition, going down 1-0 at home to AJ Auxerre courtesy of Sébastien Haller's extra-time strike. Elsewhere, Toulouse FC posted a 3-1 comeback victory at US Créteil-Lusitanos to advance, Wissam Ben Yedder putting the tie to bed in added time.

Valenciennes FC, bottom of Ligue 1, fell at home to neighbours ES Troyes AC – relegated from the top flight last season – by the same scoreline, while Stade Rennais FC edged visitors AS Nancy-Lorraine 2-1 after extra time. SC Bastia took their place in the round of 16 draw on 7 November by beating Corsican rivals AC Ajaccio 1-0, Ilan on target against his former club. Home advantage also counted as Tours FC overcame third-tier Amiens SC 1-0.
