English League Cup
Sunderland AFC and Manchester City FC booked their places in the English League Cup semi-finals after overcoming Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC respectively. Frank Lampard bundled the ball in via Lee Cattermole to give José Mourinho's team a second-half lead, but the hosts' response was spirited. Fabio Borini sent the tie into extra time with two minutes remaining, and better was to come when Ki Sung-Yong finished coolly at the death.

In Leicester, meanwhile, Aleksandar Kolarov's spectacular 30-metre free-kick and goals either side of the break from Edin Džeko put Manuel Pellegrini's side out of sight. Lloyd Dyer posted a consolation for the first division outfit 13 minutes from time.

Copa del Rey
FC Barcelona beat third-tier FC Cartagena 3-0 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate, strikes from Pedro Rodríguez, Cristian Tello and Neymar securing a last-eight berth. They were joined by Levante UD, who overturned a 1-0 deficit to dispatch RC Recreativo de Huelva 4-0, while Getafe CF consigned Girona FC to a 4-1 reverse after being held 1-1 in the opening fixture.

Elsewhere, Villarreal CF edged Elche FC 1-0, advancing 3-2 overall, while CA Osasuna prevailed on away goals against Málaga CF, following up a 3-3 stalemate by holding Bernd Schuster's men 1-1 at home. As for Granada CF, they let slip a 2-0 first-leg lead to draw 2-2 with AD Alcorcón, before succumbing on penalties.

French League Cup
Venezuela striker Fernando Aristeguieta struck 16 minutes from time as FC Nantes – fifth in Ligue 1 – booked a quarter-final ticket by beating second division club AJ Auxerre 1-0. The lineup for the last eight will be finalised on Wednesday, with Paris Saint-Germain v AS Saint-Étienne among the pick of seven remaining ties.
