Malky Mackay has been sacked as manager of English Premier League team Cardiff City AFC.
A short statement on the club's website said a replacement for the 41-year-old "will be appointed and announced in due course". Speculation surrounding Mackay's future had intensified in recent weeks, but his position appeared to be safe for the time being when Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said last Sunday that he will remain in the job for the "foreseeable future".
However, a 3-0 home loss on Thursday to Southampton FC – Cardiff's second defeat of the busy festive period – has prompted Mackay's dismissal with the Bluebirds lying one point and two places above the relegation zone in this their first season in the top tier since 1961/62.
Mackay took charge in June 2011, overseeing 54 wins in 125 games. In his first campaign he guided the south Wales side to the League Cup final, where they were beaten on penalties at Wembley by Liverpool FC, and last term led Cardiff to the Championship title by eight points, thus ending their long exile from the top table of English football.
